RETURN OF KATHERINE THE GREAT
“People were driving me mad about the old stuff, so we’ve done it all again” vital Hamnett tells me in Paris in June heralding the re-launch of her wicked Katherine Hamnett London line. Was double thrilled to find out bout this as was a massive fan of her cool, clean, utilitarian gear (in the Eighties&Nineties). This was one of the coups of the season, if you're into actually stylish style, that is.
Was also glad to found many favourite pieces represented. I had the pegs in a in thick gaberdine, with super narrow bottoms and big old high arse. "Ah yes, the 'Brace Pant'" Hamnett recalls, giving it its correct name. Her sweats and tees were wicked street fare, too, and also parachutes silks, which are gonna look particularly right, right now.
Parachute silk shirts come in two styles, but the best is with bellows pocket. Something new is a padded silk jumpsuit "I felt sorry for the men in the onezy style- they looked liked done one- so I gave the them a drawstring waist". The padded silk sweats are really good, am gonna get one when I get my act together.
As activated as ever, Hamnett still doing brisk trade in non-profit, politically slanted slogan tees that she was the champion off back in The Eighties. "Cancel Brexit" is particularly significant right now (click). Will insert some suitable links and images shortly, ish.
So for September, a 15 piece one-line collection includes long sleeve ‘Parachute’ silk shirts (£340) and updated padded silk joggers (£450) in khakis, black and white, very much in same vein as Hammnet silks worn by by Bowie and Jagger in the curiously compelling Dancing In The Street video. As Family Guys' Peter pointed out, "remember, this video actually happened"..
More classics include cotton drill brace back pegs (£280) a bomber jacket in recycled polyester (£490) and an oversized drill cotton parka (£685), all in organic cotton, all made according to Global Organic Textile Standard. “Everything made ethically, as environmentally as possible, whilst preserving traditional skills.” Thoroughly laudable Katherine, but admit I wore it as looks super style-savvy.
